School Notes

Amy Burke, an eighth-grader at Moore Middle School, won first place and a $2,000 scholarship from the Nebraska Educational Savings Trust for her entry into its 2014 “Why I Want to Go to College” writing contest. Burke is the daughter of Steve and Jackie Burke, of Arvada.
Nathan Von Rentzell, of Arvada, was recognized at the Concordia University science department’s annual awards banquet. Rentzell graduated with a degree in biology.
Two student athletes at Ralston Valley have been awarded the second annual Lisa Nelson memorial scholarships. Madalena DeAndrea is senior class president and will attend the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall. Jonathon Gillespie will attend Duke University and is Ralston’s student body president. The scholarships are for $1,000.
Sarah Piersky, of Arvada, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Kansas.
Nehemiah Soler, of Arvada, made the spring 2014 dean’s list at Chadron State College.
Kaylee Pratt, of Arvada, was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Champlain College. Pratt is majoring in creative media.
Austin Curtis Garza, of Arvada, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in family and human services from John Brown University.
Sarah Greer and Nicole Roby, of Arvada, were named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Creighton University.
Kelly Tycksen, of Arvada, graduated with honors with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Simpson University. Tycksen was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Simpson.
Jamie Pickett, of Arvada, was inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society campus chapter at Simpson University. Pickett’s major is communications. Pickett also was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list.
Nicholas David Reinicke, of Arvada, was named to the spring 2014 president’s honor roll at the University of Wyoming.
Mattie Bockhold, of Arvada, was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Bockhold is freshman majoring in pre-elementary education.
Charlee Ottersberg, of Arvada, received the “Living the Ritual” Greek award for the 2013-14 academic year at Marietta College. Ottersberg is majoring in advertising public relations and will graduate in 2015. Ottersberg also was named to the spring 2014 dean’s high honors list at Marietta. Ottersberg is a graduate of Arvada West High School.
Christa Michall Lindeman, of Arvada, earned a bachelor’s degree from Concordia University, Nebraska.
Ian Harkreader, of Arvada, was named to the spring 2014 president’s list at Drake University.
Bryce Markiewicz, of Arvada, graduated with a master’s degree in organizational leadership leader development from Columbus State University.
Tanner Traughber, of Arvada, made the spring 2013 dean’s list at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Traughber is in the packaging science program.

Gabrielle Makatura, of Lakewood, received a $1,000 William E. Lusk Scholarship from Fort Hays State University. Makatura is a sophomore majoring in international business. She graduated from Green Mountain High School.
Meredith Yorchak, of Lakewood, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science in May from Northwestern College. Yorchak is the daughter of John and Marilee Yorchak.
Ellen Conrad, of Lakewood, was named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Goshen College. Conrad is a sophomore majoring in environmental science.
Brittany Gilbert, Elizabeth Johnson, Tara Whitley and Rebecca Willis, of Lakewood, were named to the spring 2014 dean’s list at Creighton University.
Daren Paul Valencia Casey, of Lakewood, was named to the spring 2014 dean’s honor roll at Sterling College.
Dean Haas, of Lakewood, was an integral part of Fort Lewis College’s recent cycling success. Fort Lewis was named the No. 2 USA Cycling Collegiate Division 1 team in the nation. Haas raced with the team for the academic year and participated in national championships in track and road. Haas was also an individual national champ in scratch race and team time trial events. Haas’s major is economics.

Sabrina Lea Jensen, of Lakewood, earned a master’s degree from the College of Law from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Allen Blaylock, of Lakewood, graduated with a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Community Notes

The Golden Elks awarded 1,000 scholarships to Addison Coen, of St. Christen Academy; Tanner Bryson, Maria Fluitt and Courtney Thoemke, of Golden High School; and Emily Bernstein, of Denver School of the Arts. Dale Nickell, of Golden High School, received the Colorado Elks Association Scholarship given to each lodge to award.
Also honored were Matt Britt, Deputy of the Year; Sgt. Marcus Williams, Golden Police Officer of the Year; Chad Wachs, Golden Firefighter of the Year; and Brian White, Fairmount Firefighter of the Year. Teacher of the Year was Kasey Sprinden, of Brady High School; and Citizen of the Year was Ed Utsch, for his work with homeless people, veterans and community recycling.

In the Military

Navy Fireman Kenton R. Harshbarger, son of Barbara A. Weber and brother of Jessica L. Harshbarger, of Pine, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Harshbarger is a 2008 graduate of Green Mountain High School, Lakewood. He is also a 2012 graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Navy Seaman Stephanie E. Shackleton, daughter of Peter R. Haas and granddaughter of Alan M. Haas, of Arvada, and Denise L. Zamora, of Thornton, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Shackleton is a 2003 graduate of Arvada High School.
